If you’re like me, throwing away a fresh Christmas wreath is a sad experience, especially when they still look good. If only we could keep them a little longer to extend the holiday season into winter. We can!

You can easily take your fresh or preserved Christmas wreath into New Year's Day by substituting the red bows and the like with gold or silver ones and some streamers. Other possible decorations include a Happy New Years banner or hat and some small party horns or plastic champagne glasses. Get creative and have some fun.

I’ll have more on this subject throughout the coming year. Why limit yourself to only displaying wreaths during the month of December? Wreaths can be a unique and versatile decoration for any season or holiday.

I have found that my customers look for Seasonal wreaths that will suit their decorating needs for about a three year period of time. Four wreaths used for three to four months each will give you the updated brightness you desire and keep your entryway decor in line with the coming Seasons and Holidays!

A spring wreath can be hung at the beginning of March. Summer wreath goes up the first of June. My fall wreath comes out around mid September and Christmas goes up right after Thanksgiving. Advent is the period preceding the Christmas season. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, and covers four Sundays. Because the day it begins changes from year to year, so does the length of each Advent season. In 2008, Advent begins on November 30.

Advent wreaths have their origins in the folk traditions of northern Europe, where in the deep of winter people lit candles on wheel-shaped bundles of evergreen. Both the evergreen and the circular shape symbolized ongoing life. The candlelight gave comfort at this darkest time of the year, as people looked forward to the longer days of spring.

Later, Eastern European Christians adopted this practice. By the sixteenth century, they were making Advent wreaths much as we know them today. An advent wreath traditionally contains four candles-three purple and one rose. Purple dyes were once so rare and costly that they were associated with royalty; the Roman Catholic Church has long used this color around Christmas and Easter to honor Jesus. The three purple candles in the Advent wreath symbolize hope, peace, and love. These candles are lit on the first, second, and fourth Sundays of Advent. The rose candle, which symbolizes joy, is usually lit on the third Sunday.

Sometimes a fifth candle is placed inside the Advent wreath. This candle is lit on Christmas Day. It is white, the color associated with angels and the birth of Jesus.

Because Advent wreaths are an informal celebration, not all are the same. Instead of purple candles, some people use blue, which recalls the color of the night sky before daylight returns. Others use all white candles.

Dried Hydrangea Wreath

Dried hydrangea wreaths are beautiful and versatile as a home decoration, and a lot of fun to make as well.

You can either buy already dried hydrangea flowers from your local craft store, or you can dry your own. The biggest trick when drying hydrangea is when you pick the flowers. It is best to pick them just before the anticipated first fall frost in your area. If you pick them earlier, they just will not dry right.

They can be dried by either hanging them upside down in a darkened room, or you can set them in a vase upright. The drying process is quite easy as long as you pick the flowers at the correct time. After they are dried, pick off any dead and discolored brown blooms.

Now, pick the type of base you want to use for a wreath. Metal, Styrofoam or grapevine type wreath bases are all available at your local craft store or online. You will also need some floral wire and a low melt point hot glue gun if you choose to do a Styrofoam wreath.

Think of balance in shape and color as you space out each bloom over the surface of the wreath base. You don’t want any sticking out above the others; you don’t want one side of the wreath to be fuller than the other. Try stepping back and looking from a distance and just think “balance”.

When you are done arranging the flowers, this wreath is either finished, or you can add to it. You can add small sprigs of dried baby’s breath or any other dried flowers, decorations or ribbons and bows. It really depends on the look you want to achieve.

Memorial Day, a legal holiday observed annually on the last Monday in May, in honor of the nation’s armed services personnel killed in wartime. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day because it is a time for decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags. Over time, the designation Memorial Day became far more common.

In the United States, local observances to honor the war dead became widespread following the American Civil War (1861-1865), which had taken more than 600,000 lives. These local observances inspired General John Alexander Logan, the leader of a Union veterans’ group called the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), to issue a general’s order in 1868 designating May 30 as a day for “strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.” (By “the late rebellion,” Logan meant the Civil War, also known as the War of Rebellion.) Accordingly, on May 30, 1868, several thousand people gathered to observe Decoration Day at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial ceremonies were presided over by Washington officials such as General Ulysses Grant and included a tribute by General James A. Garfield. Following the speeches, thousands of war veterans, orphans, and other participants helped decorate the more than 20,000 graves of Civil War dead in the cemetery.

A number of towns in the United States claim to have originated the custom of decorating graves in memorial of the Civil War dead. However, in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation that declared Waterloo, New York, the birthplace of Memorial Day. Townspeople there had begun decorating graves of soldiers, flying flags at half-mast, and organizing parades of veterans 100 years earlier, in May 1866. Waterloo has continued this tradition every year.

In 1873 New York became the first state to declare a holiday on May 30. By the end of the 1800s, states throughout the nation had declared Memorial Day a holiday. Enjoy your holiday.
